Q:Is my electrical panel safe?
All electrical panels original to the build of the house or building were most likely installed safe and up to code. However, oftentimes during the course of their life circuits are added in, and remodels occur. All electrical parts wear out eventually. If you have any concerns, Coyote Electric LLC is a licensed, and insured local electrical contractor that can help you correct any current or future problems.
Q:What is a GFCI outlet?
Ground fault circuit interrupting [GFCI] receptacles installed in houses, are installed with the purpose of protection. They measure the balance of the electrical current. If there is a ground fault, they shut power off to any device being protected by the GFCI. A ground fault is when electricity unexpectedly takes a path to ground. If unprotected it can be dangerous. GFCI receptacles are required by the national electrical code and the state of Idaho. They are found in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, any unfinished portions of basements, garages, the exterior of the house, and in shop spaces.
Q: What should I be concerned about as a new or experienced homeowner?
Every house is different but can have common concerns. If you ever smell melting plastic when using any electrical device, don’t ignore it. If you see melting, that is a concern. If you look in your electrical panel and can see discoloration on circuit breakers or conductors that means that there is too much heat on the wires. In the end, if you ever have any questions, don’t hesitate to call us out for a electrical inspection.
Q: Why don’t my lights turn on anymore?
There could be so many reasons that the lights don’t turn on. The very first thing you should do is change the light bulb. If that doesn’t work. You can make sure that your circuit breaker is turned on. All electrical parts wear out eventually, and this could mean that the light switch, or a wire nut could be loose as well. These repairs can be dangerous if done improperly. If your lights don’t work, go ahead and let us come over and help you repair your house in a safe and affordable way.
Q: What’s wrong with my outlet? Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.
There are several different possibilities, but primarily, it is because the outlet is just at the end of its life. Outlets get used so often that over time, as you push your cord end into the wall, the points of contact get loose. As they are used, outlets are exposed to a lot of heat. That means that things are going to swell just a little bit and contract a little bit.
Q: Why don’t i have any lights in my house?
Older houses tend to have less lights because the switches were wired to outlets to turn lamps on and off. This can be tricky to remedy because they also installed a lot of ceiling heat.
Q: Why does only half of my house turn on?
You may have lost half of the power to your panel. Give us a call to come verify if this is the issue.
